Day Trips from Cebu City: The 10 Best, with Quick Facts for Each

By KR Travel and Tours · Cebu tour operator since 2004 · Updated October 30, 2026 · 5 min read

Cebu City and Mactan are the natural base for most visitors, and almost everything famous on the island can be done as a day trip. Some are easy half days, others are long, early adventures. Here are our ten favourites, with honest quick facts for each.

A quick note on travel times. Cebu is a long, narrow island, and most of the famous sights are in the south, so road time is the main cost of any day trip. The times below are typical from Cebu City; from Mactan add a little extra for the bridge and city traffic. Fees for parks, sanctuaries and activities are set locally and change from time to time, so we confirm what is included when you book.

South Cebu: Oslob, Sumilon, Kawasan, Moalboal

1. Oslob whale shark watching

  • Travel time: about 3 hours each way from Cebu City.
  • Start: very early, as the watching runs in the morning.
  • Good to know: watching is by boat, with snorkelling as an add-on. Feeding of the whale sharks is controversial; keep your distance, no touching and no flash. Read our Oslob guide.

2. Sumilon Island sandbar

  • Travel time: a short boat ride from the Oslob area.
  • Best for: white sand, clear water and photos. Pairs naturally with Oslob.
  • Good to know: the sandbar's shape changes with tides and seasons.

3. Kawasan Falls and canyoneering

  • Travel time: about 3 hours to Badian.
  • Best for: adventure lovers. Canyoneering takes about 3 to 4 hours; an easy falls visit is the alternative.
  • Good to know: closes after heavy rain. See the Kawasan guide.

4. Moalboal sardine run and Pescador Island

  • Travel time: about 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • Best for: snorkellers and divers. The sardine school is close to shore and turtles are often seen.
  • Good to know: do not touch turtles or chase the fish. See the Moalboal guide.

Mactan islands

5. Mactan island hopping

  • Travel time: a short drive to Mactan, then roughly 30 to 45 minutes by boat to the first island.
  • Best for: families, beginners and anyone short on time.
  • Good to know: Hilutungan and Nalusuan are marine sanctuaries with small fees; Caohagan and Pandanon are good for beach time. Use reef-safe sunscreen. See our island hopping guide.

Bohol

6. Bohol countryside tour

  • Travel time: about 2 hours by fast ferry each way to Tagbilaran.
  • Highlights: the Chocolate Hills, tarsiers, Loboc river lunch cruise, Baclayon Church and the Blood Compact Shrine.
  • Good to know: a long day; ferries can be affected by weather. See our Bohol day trip guide.

Simala and the city

7. Simala Shrine, Sibonga

  • Travel time: about 1.5 to 2 hours south of Cebu City.
  • Best for: pilgrims, families and architecture fans. The castle-like church is striking.
  • Good to know: modest dress required; weekends and holidays are crowded. Expect many stairs inside the complex, and go early on a weekday for a calmer visit.

8. Cebu City heritage tour

  • Travel time: none to speak of, usually a half day.
  • Highlights: Magellan's Cross, the Basilica del Santo Niño, Fort San Pedro, Plaza Independencia and the hilltop temples.
  • Good to know: the perfect arrival or departure day activity. It can be combined with Mactan's Lapu-Lapu Shrine as a twin city tour.

Camotes and the aerial tour

9. Camotes Islands (long day)

  • Travel time: a drive north to the port in Danao, then a ferry of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the boat.
  • Highlights: quiet beaches, caves and a lake on a rural island group.
  • Good to know: ferry schedules limit your time there, so an overnight is much better. We can arrange Camotes as part of a custom trip.

10. Cebu aerial tour

  • Travel time: departs from the general aviation area at Mactan-Cebu airport.
  • Best for: special occasions and photographers: Cebu City, Mactan and the small islands from above.
  • Good to know: weather dependent, small aircraft with limited seats.

How to choose

  • Only one day? Oslob plus Kawasan or Sumilon for adventure; island hopping for a relaxed day.
  • With kids or seniors? Island hopping, the city tour or Simala, with a private van.
  • Love the sea? Combine Oslob with Moalboal, or stay overnight in the south and do the sardine run without rushing.
  • Interested in history and faith? Pair the city heritage tour with Simala and the old churches of Carcar and Sibonga on the way.
  • Want everything? Spread the long trips over several days with rest days between. Our Cebu itineraries and multi-day combos show how.

Whatever you choose, pack the same basics for a day trip: water shoes, swimwear under your clothes, a dry bag, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, cash in small bills and a change of clothes for the ride home. Avoid stacking two pre-dawn South Cebu days back to back; a lighter day in between makes the whole trip more enjoyable.

Weather matters for every sea trip, so check the best time to visit Cebu and keep one flexible day in your plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Cebu City?

For most first-time visitors, Oslob whale sharks combined with Kawasan Falls or Sumilon is the classic. For an easy day, Mactan island hopping is the best choice.

How far is Oslob from Cebu City?

About 3 hours by road each way, so tours leave before dawn.

Can I visit Bohol as a day trip from Cebu?

Yes. The fast ferry takes about 2 hours each way, and a countryside tour covers the Chocolate Hills, tarsiers and Loboc river.

Is Camotes a good day trip?

It is possible but long, because of the drive to Danao and the ferry. An overnight stay is much more relaxing.
