Oslob Whale Sharks: Rules, Best Time and What to Know Before You Go

Swimming next to a whale shark, the largest fish in the world, is the reason many travellers come to Cebu. In Oslob, at the southern tip of the island, it is possible almost every day of the year. Here is how it works and how to do it well.

How it works

Everything happens in Barangay Tan-awan, Oslob. You register, attend a short briefing, then a small paddle boat (a banca) takes you a short distance from shore where the whale sharks come close to the surface. You can stay in the boat and watch, or snorkel with a mask and life vest. Time with the whale sharks is short, usually around 30 minutes, so the whole stop takes about 2 hours including waiting.

The watching fee is set by the Oslob local government and is higher for foreign visitors than for locals. It changes from time to time, so we confirm the current fee when you book.

The rules in the water

  • Do not touch the whale sharks and keep your distance (your guide will show you where to stay).
  • No sunscreen, lotion or insect repellent before you get in. Wear a rash guard instead.
  • No flash photography and no underwater lights.
  • Do not chase or block a whale shark; let it pass.
  • No diving down or riding: stay at the surface unless you are on an approved dive.
  • Listen to the briefing and your boat crew; breaking the rules can mean a fine.

Best time to go

Time of day: as early as possible. The first boats go out around 6 AM. The sea is usually calmest and the light is beautiful. By mid-morning it gets busy, especially on weekends and holidays.

Time of year: whale sharks are seen in Oslob all year. The dry months (roughly February to May) give the clearest water and calmest seas. From June to November there are more rainy days and, in some weeks, rough seas that can pause the boats.

Because Oslob is 3 hours from Cebu City, our pick-up is usually around 4–5 AM. You can also sleep one night in Oslob or nearby South Cebu to make the morning easier.

What to bring

  • Swimwear and a rash guard (instead of sunscreen).
  • Towel, change of clothes and a dry bag.
  • Waterproof phone case or action camera (no flash).
  • Cash in pesos for small purchases and optional camera rental.
  • Motion sickness tablets if you get seasick (the boat ride is short).

Combine it with Sumilon Island or Kawasan Falls

After the whale sharks, you are already in the south, so make a full day of it:

  • Sumilon Island sandbar: a short boat ride from Oslob, with a white sandbar that changes shape with the tides and a protected marine sanctuary.
  • Kawasan Falls in Badian: turquoise pools, or full canyoneering from Alegria. See our Kawasan guide.
  • Tumalog Falls: a curtain-like waterfall close to Oslob.

Is Oslob whale shark watching ethical?

It is a fair question. The whale sharks in Oslob come close because local fishermen feed them, and marine scientists have raised concerns about how this affects their behaviour. Rules on distance, touching and group sizes were introduced to reduce the impact. If you go, follow every rule, keep your distance and choose a respectful operator. If you prefer to see marine life with no feeding at all, the Moalboal sardine run is a completely natural alternative.
