Cebu is the easiest island in the Philippines to plan: one international airport (Mactan-Cebu), short boat rides to white-sand islands, and South Cebu's whale sharks, waterfalls and sardines within a day trip. After more than 20 years of running tours here, these are the plans we recommend to our own guests, with realistic travel times.
Before you plan: three things that decide your days
- Where you sleep. Mactan (near the airport and the beach resorts) is best for island hopping. Cebu City is best for food, malls and the heritage sights. For South Cebu, every tour picks you up at your hotel, so either base works.
- South Cebu starts early. Oslob is about 3 hours by road from the city. The whale sharks are seen in the early morning, so pick-up is usually 4–5 AM. Plan an easy evening before.
- Bohol is a full day. The fast ferry takes about 2 hours each way. If you have 5 days or more, a day trip works well; with 7 days, think about one night there.

3 days in Cebu: the highlights
Day 1: Cebu City heritage and Mactan
Arrive and see where Philippine Christian history began: Magellan's Cross, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, Fort San Pedro and Plaza Independencia, then cross to Mactan for the Lapu-Lapu shrine. It is a gentle first day that works even after a morning flight.
Day 2: Mactan island hopping
A private boat to the marine sanctuaries: snorkel over shallow coral at Hilutungan and Nalusuan, have lunch on the beach and relax on Caohagan's white sand. It is our most family-friendly day.
Day 3: Oslob whale sharks and Kawasan Falls
The big day. Whale sharks in the early morning, then the turquoise pools of Kawasan Falls in Badian. Back at your hotel in the evening. Read our Oslob guide before you go.
5 days in Cebu: add Moalboal and Bohol
Follow days 1–3 above, then:
Day 4: Moalboal sardine run and Pescador Island
Swim with millions of sardines a few metres from Panagsama Beach, often with sea turtles, then snorkel the wall at Pescador Island. See our Moalboal guide.
Day 5: Bohol countryside day trip
Fast ferry to Tagbilaran, then the Chocolate Hills, tarsiers, the Loboc River lunch cruise, Baclayon Church and the man-made forest. Details in our Bohol day trip guide.

7 days in Cebu: the relaxed version
With a week you can split the long South Cebu day in two and keep a free day for the beach:
- Day 1: Cebu City heritage and Mactan.
- Day 2: Mactan island hopping.
- Day 3: Oslob whale sharks and the Sumilon Island sandbar.
- Day 4: Kawasan Falls canyoneering (adventure) or an easy swim at the falls.
- Day 5: Moalboal sardine run and Pescador Island.
- Day 6: Bohol day trip (or stay one night in Bohol and see Panglao beach).
- Day 7: Simala Shrine in the morning, beach and shopping in the afternoon, then fly out.
Prefer everything arranged with hotels and transfers? Our hotel packages and ready-made multi-day tour combos do exactly this.
Tips that save time
- Do not plan South Cebu on your arrival or departure day.
- Keep one flexible day: sea conditions can move a boat trip.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes and a dry bag; most boat days are wet.
- Book whale sharks and Bohol a few days ahead in peak season (Christmas, Holy Week, Sinulog in January).
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Cebu?
Three days covers the highlights (city, islands, Oslob). Five days lets you add Moalboal and Bohol. A week is ideal if you want to relax and avoid very early mornings two days in a row.
Can you do Oslob and Kawasan Falls in one day?
Yes. It is the most popular South Cebu day: whale sharks early in the morning, then Kawasan Falls in Badian about 1.5–2 hours away, back in the evening.
Is a Bohol day trip from Cebu worth it?
Yes, if you have at least 4–5 days. The fast ferry is about 2 hours each way and the countryside tour covers the Chocolate Hills, tarsiers and the Loboc River in one day.
Where should I stay in Cebu?
Mactan for beach resorts and island hopping; Cebu City for food, shopping and heritage. Our tours include hotel pick-up from both.
