Mactan-Cebu Airport to Your Hotel: Transfer Options Explained

By KR Travel and Tours · Cebu tour operator since 2004 · Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Most international visitors to Cebu land at Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and the first question is always the same: how do I get to my hotel? The good news is that it is easy. Here is how each option works, how long the ride usually takes and a few tips we give every guest before they fly.

Where the airport is

The airport is not in Cebu City itself. It sits on Mactan Island, in Lapu-Lapu City, which is linked to mainland Cebu by bridges. This matters because it decides your travel time:

  • Mactan resorts (Punta Engaño, Maribago, Buyong and nearby) are on the same island as the airport.
  • Cebu City and Mandaue hotels are across the Mactan Channel, reached by one of the bridges or the newer expressway link to the South Road Properties.
  • South Cebu (Oslob, Moalboal, Badian) is a long road trip away, usually 3 hours or more.

International and domestic flights generally use different terminals. Check your ticket, because pick-up points differ, and tell your driver or hotel which terminal you arrive at.

Your transfer options

Pre-booked private transfer

A car or van is waiting for you with a name sign at the arrivals area. You pay in advance or on a fixed agreed rate, the vehicle fits your luggage, and the driver knows the hotel. This is the easiest choice for families, groups, late-night arrivals and first-time visitors. We arrange airport transfers as part of our packages, or on their own through our car and van rental service.

Airport taxi

There are taxi queues outside arrivals. Metered taxis are the norm; there are usually regular white taxis and a separate airport taxi line that costs a bit more. Make sure the meter is running when you leave. Taxis are fine for one or two people with normal luggage, but space is tight for big suitcases, surfboards or dive gear.

Grab

The Grab app works in Cebu and shows the fare before you book. Pick-up happens at a designated area, and at busy times you may wait a while for a driver. You need mobile data to use it, so sort out your SIM or eSIM first (see our guide to money, SIM cards and internet in Cebu).

Hotel or resort shuttle

Some larger resorts offer their own airport transfer, sometimes free and sometimes for a fee. Check with your hotel before you travel, and ask whether it runs on a schedule or must be booked in advance.

Travel times: Mactan vs Cebu City

Times in Cebu depend far more on traffic than on distance, so treat these as rough guides:

  • Mactan resorts: usually 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Cebu City (Ayala, IT Park, downtown): about 30 minutes on a quiet evening, often an hour or more at rush hour.
  • South Cebu resorts: usually 3 to 4 hours or more by road.

Weekday mornings and late afternoons are the slowest. Friday evenings and holiday weekends can be very slow on the bridges. If you have an evening dinner or a tour the same day, give yourself plenty of buffer.

Arrival tips

  • Fill in eTravel before you fly. It is free on the official government site. Our eTravel guide explains how.
  • Send your flight number to whoever is picking you up, so they can track delays.
  • Get some pesos at an airport ATM or money changer for tips, snacks and small purchases.
  • Ignore unofficial offers of rides inside the terminal. Use the official taxi lines, Grab, or your pre-booked driver.
  • Keep your hotel address handy, ideally saved offline on your phone.
  • Arriving after midnight? Pre-book. Taxis and Grab are still around, but a waiting driver is far simpler when you are tired.

Leaving Cebu, plan to arrive at the airport early, especially from Cebu City, because the bridge traffic is hard to predict. We usually suggest leaving earlier than you think you need to.

Travelling with children or a group

Taxis rarely have child seats, and fitting five people plus luggage into one sedan is not realistic. For families and groups, a van is usually the better choice: everyone rides together, bags go in the back, and nobody has to wait in a second queue. Tell us the ages of your children and the number of bags when you book, so we send the right vehicle. If you are a large group or a company trip, we can arrange several vans or a coaster bus and coordinate them with your flight times.

Going further: South Cebu and Bohol

If you are heading straight to Oslob, Moalboal or Badian, a private van from the airport is by far the most practical option. Public buses run from Cebu City, but you would first need to get across to the city and then sit through a long ride with luggage.

Going to Bohol? Most travellers take a fast ferry from the Cebu City pier, which means a transfer from the airport to the port first. Our packages include these transfers so you do not have to plan each leg yourself.

Once you have settled in, the classic first outing from a Mactan hotel is a morning on the water, often with a pick-up from your resort.

Need just a ride, a van for a group or a driver for a day? Send us your flight details through our services page and we will confirm the options and current rates.
