When you look at Cebu packages, you will see the same trip offered as "private" and "joint". The sights can be identical, but the experience is quite different. This guide explains the difference honestly, so you can pick the one that fits your group and budget.
What the terms mean
A joint tour (also called a shared or join-in tour) combines several small parties into one group. Everyone follows the same fixed itinerary and timetable, shares the van or boat, and is picked up from hotels along a route.
A private tour is reserved only for your party. You get your own air-conditioned vehicle and driver (and a guide on selected tours), and we do not mix you with other guests. Start times, stops and pace can be adjusted within what is practical.
Both styles visit the same places and follow the same park rules, fees and safety requirements. The whale sharks, the Chocolate Hills and the island sanctuaries look the same from a shared van as from a private one. What changes is everything around the sights: how long you wait, how early you leave, how many people are on your boat, and whether you can change your mind during the day.
The packages also differ slightly. Joint Cebu packages bundle a standard 3-star hotel, the shared tours and transfers on set dates. Private packages are quoted for your group, can be built around a hotel you choose, and can be extended with extra days or Bohol.
How pricing works
Most of the cost of a Cebu day trip is fixed per trip: the van, fuel, driver, boat hire and guide. Entrance and environmental fees are per person.
- On a joint tour, the fixed costs are shared by everyone on board, so a solo traveller or couple pays much less than they would for a private trip.
- On a private tour, your group carries the fixed costs alone. For one or two people this is noticeably more expensive. For a family of five or a group of friends, the price per person drops and can come close to a joint tour.
That is why our private package prices are quoted by the number of persons and room sharing. The tour cards on this page show current prices, and we confirm the final quotation for your dates and group size.
Joint tours: pros and cons
Pros
- Lower price per person for small parties.
- A chance to meet other travellers.
- Simple: hotel, transfers and tours bundled with a fixed plan.
Cons
- Fixed schedule. You cannot ask the van to wait while you take extra photos.
- Pick-ups from several hotels add time at the start and end of the day.
- The group moves at the pace of its slowest member, or the timetable moves on without you.
- Joint departures depend on enough bookings and a standard hotel category is used.
Private tours: pros and cons
Pros
- Your own timing: start early to beat crowds, or later if you have kids or older travellers.
- Flexible stops for food, toilets, rest or shopping.
- Easier with luggage, car seats, mobility aids or camera gear.
- More privacy and a calmer experience, especially on long South Cebu days.
- Can be customised: swap a sight, add a hotel upgrade, or build a full itinerary.
Cons
- Higher price per person for one or two travellers.
- Less social, if meeting people is part of your trip.

Which one suits you
- Solo travellers and couples on a budget: joint tours usually make the most sense. See our solo traveller guide.
- Families with babies or young children: private, so you control nap times and stops. Read Cebu with a baby or toddler.
- Seniors and travellers with limited mobility: private, for a gentle pace. See senior-friendly Cebu.
- Groups of four or more: compare both. Private often becomes good value per person.
- Photographers, honeymooners and special occasions: private.
- Short on time: private, because there is no waiting for other pick-ups.
Mixing both
You do not have to choose one style for the whole trip. Many guests do a shared island hopping day and book private transport for the long South Cebu trip, or join a Bohol tour but keep the city day private. Island hopping is a good example: shared boats are cheaper, while a private boat lets you choose the islands and the time on each beach.
A simple test helps: list the two or three days that matter most to you. If any of them involve small children, a special occasion, a tight flight connection or long drives, book those days private. For the rest, a joint tour is often perfectly fine and saves money for something else.
You can browse the families directly: joint Cebu packages, private Cebu packages and private Cebu and Bohol packages. If you are unsure, tell us your group size and dates and we will compare both options for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is a joint tour in Cebu?
A joint tour is a shared tour: several small parties travel together on a fixed itinerary and share the van, boat and guide, which lowers the cost per person.
Is a private tour much more expensive?
For one or two people, yes, because you carry the vehicle and boat costs alone. For families and groups, the price per person gets much closer to a joint tour.
Can I change the itinerary on a joint tour?
Generally no. Joint tours follow a fixed schedule. If you need flexibility, a private tour is the better choice.
Do you mix guests on private tours?
No. A private tour is only for your party, with your own vehicle.
Prices on tour cards are live from our booking system. Fees set by local governments (entrance and environmental fees) can change; we confirm everything when you book.
